The 7th year of the excellent rock concert charity event for the Chania Red Cross and the Apokoronas Social Supermarket.
Last evening a packed crowd at the ampitheatre in the fabulous setting of Embrosneros in the hills above Vrysses were treated to a great night of rock music. The usual suspects, Carl Axon and the Rocking Rebels and Irish Bob and the Terrible Tarmacers were there and first time appearance by the Chania band CoreTheBand but the evening was stolen away by the fantastic pupils and teachers from the Vamos School.
They were the most entertaining group of singers and musicians I have seen at Embrosneros and I've been to five of the seven events.
Maybe my judgement was a bit coloured by them singing most of my very favourite songs, but how well did they perform them.
After a very brief show of nerves, Bon Jovi's big radio hit " You give love a bad name " was dispatched with assured aplomb. But it was with The White Stripe's massive hit " Seven Nation Army " that we all began to realise just how good this group of musicians and singers were. ( Yes I know a teacher was on the bass but I was too far away to see if he was playing the riff or one of the pupils was managing a " Jack White " )
The girls were taking turns to sing their way through a very popular setlist of hit rock music and I thought ACDCs " Highway to Hell " and Nirvana's " Smells Like Teen Spirit " were both excellent. An inspired finish with Aerosmith's rock ballad " Dream On "
It was a hard act to follow but I was delighted to see that Irish Bob didn't let us down.
His style is difficult to pin down but he has an assured way with pop rock, country rock and a bit of classic rock. A very tight set even if his mandolin and bass were threatening to loosen things up. Bob's got a great voice and he plays the guitar well. Always worth going to see when he's playing anywhere near you.
First timers at Embroneros were the excellent indie/alternative band from Chania CORETHEBAND.
These guys write all their own stuff and they will tell you that you cannot categorise their music, some is rap rock like Linkin Park but then they can sound like a punk band or even The Killers on a couple of tracks. Their vocalist, Jacob Gale releases a lot of energy on stage with his cavorting and whirling style causing some unnecessary breathless singing. Slow down a bit Jacob. The band have a huge following in Chania and probably now the rest of Greece following their latest big tour.
I've seen these guys quite a few times now and I love " Pull the Curtain ". You can make it guys and if you don't " You know I'm coming for ya ...................
To complete a great evening, and if you missed it this year, make sure you don't next year, was the evergreen Carl Axon and his Rocking Rebels. Carl, you need a singer. I know you can play the guitar, loud and fuzzy but the singing lets you down. Only Pink Floyd can do Pink Floyd ! Liked your new song though, the Cream classic " Sunshine of your love ", good guitar but strained lyrics. Entertaining as ever Carl.
